  • SH4010QA Diversity in Health and Social Care SH4010QA Diversity In HSC Assignment Brief Name of assessment: Reflective Commentary Short description: A 2000-word reflective commentary of a case-study

SH4010QA Diversity in Health and Social Care SH4010QA Diversity In HSC Assignment Brief Name of assessment: Reflective Commentary

Short description: A 2000-word reflective commentary of a case-study simulation that took place in the seminar.

    Weighting: 60%

    Due date: 29/06/26 before 3pm

    Formative feedback date: 25/05/26

Feedback release date: 4 weeks after the final submission date

Assessment Guidance You are required to write a 2000-word reflective commentary of a case-study simulation that took place in the seminar. A case study is a description of a real-life issue or situation that requires you to reflect on and analyse the main issues involved. The aim is to identify the issues and discuss them from your own point of view by relating these issues to academic literature on the topic, draw conclusions about why the issues occurred, and consider how best to respond to them.

A case study simulation is an opportunity to apply (use) theoretical knowledge from academic literature, as well as your own reflections, to real-life situations you may come across in health and social care professional contexts.

Writing a reflective commentary of a case study simulation enables you to:

Reflect on the details and complexities of issues in real-life situations. Apply (use) the knowledge gained from your academic reading of topics covered in the lectures and seminars. Discuss your experience of the case study simulation and draw conclusions for a professional response to it. Step 1: Before You Start Writing Your Reflective Commentary, You Need To: a)  Choose ONE Case study simulation to work on (** these will be presented in the Seminars)

    b) identify and make a note of the main issues and challenges the case study presents.

    c) identify and make a note of the main stakeholders (individuals, professionals, and/or groups who might have an interest in the case)

    d) Go through your lecture and seminar notes, and your reflective journal, and identify the theories, concepts and academic literature you have covered and read about (or you will need to read about) on topics that relate to the main issues you have identified in the case study.

    e) Read through the theories, concepts and academic literature to make sure you properly understand them and make notes of how you will use them to reflect on your experience of and discuss the main issues identified in the case study simulation.

Step 2: Writing Your Reflective Commentary Your reflective commentary should include all of the following 4 elements: introduction, description, reflective discussion and conclusion.

The suggested word count for each section below is only a suggestion; you can have more or less of the suggested word count for any of the sections, so long as the whole is up to 2000 words.

Introduction (150 – 200 words): begin by defining the main purpose of the case study simulation and briefly outline the overall problem in the case study that needs to be solved.

Description (200- 250 words): write a brief description of the case study by giving a summary of the main issues, challenges identified and the main stakeholders. Assume the reader knows nothing of the assessment task and provide enough information to give a context for your reflections and discussion.

Reflective discussion (1200 – 1400): discuss the main issues identified using information gained from your academic reading, and discuss your own reflections on your experience of the case study simulation.

Conclusion (250–350 words): summarise the conclusions you have come to and present recommendations for resolving the case (for each recommendation, you should also go further to provide a reason why you suggest each recommendation).

Reference List This is a reference list of all the academic and non-academic literature you have used in the reflective commentary.

A reference list is not a bibliography. A bibliography is a list of all you have read and all you have used. But the reference list is only a list of all you have used and cited in this work.

Use the Harvard Referencing Style to arrange your reference list.

    • You are expected to reference readings studied on the module in your coursework.

Upload your coursework to the submission link by the due date of May 11 2026 by 3pm. in a Word file, as instructed.

Marking Criteria Rationale for this assessment method

This assessment is designed to evaluate the extent to which your work meets the following module learning outcomes (LOs):

    1. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislations and policies, explaining their role in promoting equality, equity, diversity and inclusion in health and social care.
    2. Consider the impact of stigmatisation, labelling, stereotyping and discrimination and discuss their implication for diverse identities and experiences in health and social care practice.

Include an explicit discussion as to why you selected these theories/models/frameworks as opposed to others (i.e., what value or perspective do they offer?). You should choose a theory that aligns with the topic and provides a lens to analyze the issue more rigorously. For example, consider using Latino Critical Race Theory (Villalpando) if you are writing about Latinos in higher education. You may want to use the CECE Model (Museus) or the Inclusive Excellence Model (Williams et al.) if discussing diversity plans. Theories, models, and frameworks will be touched upon in class. 3. Analysis, Implications, and Recommendations: In 6 – 7 pages, analyze the issue or topic using the selected theory/model/framework(s). You are encouraged to supplement the information you provided in the introduction with additional data, articles, reports, and other sources that will shape and strengthen your analysis. What main accomplishments, challenges, strategies, techniques, etc., shape the issue? What is needed to address or advance the issue further? What patterns (if any) do you observe? What are the implications and recommendations for practitioners, researchers, specific individuals, offices, or interested parties within higher education (e.g., the Chief Diversity Officer, the President, faculty and staff, students, Offices of Equity and Inclusion, nonprofit organizations)? Provide specific implications and recommendations for specific audiences (be creative, innovative, and realistic). For example, if you discuss the lack of diverse offices and plans at particular types of institutions, what are the implications for those specific types of institutions? How might they begin to develop diversity offices and strategies? Pay attention to the context you outlined in the first section (in other words, be focused and consistent). You may also wish to consider and discuss issues of implementation, data gathering, evaluations of progress, etc., for the recommendations that you offer.

Construct a Cover Page APA 7th Edition Format Write the Introduction Introduce your curriculum development topic issue and explain (rationale) why it is vital to special education (typically one paragraph). A thesis statement must be established and included in the introduction. For this CDP, put your thesis statement in bold black print. Once the context and the background are established, summarize what the paper will discuss (i.e., the main contributions of the research you have completed for this assignment and why the work is essential and significant). This portion of the introduction will establish the paper’s framework and prepare readers for what is to follow. The introduction should be no more than one to two paragraphs (no more than one page total). APA 7th Edition format Write the Literature Review The literature review should cover the critical issues and synthesize the current literature related to your topic. Synthesize the concepts found in various professional sources into a coherent whole or big idea. The literature review must be three (3) pages long and written using APA formatting for in-text citations and end-of-text references. Keep your thoughts at the forefront of the paper. Although you are using the literature as evidence to prove your point, try to begin each paragraph with a statement that you believe to be relevant and true to the issue, then follow it up with the evidence from the literature. Be sure to use evidence (i.e., citations). Anytime you communicate an idea that does not belong to you, you must cite it!!! Use direct quotes sparingly. Paraphrasing in your own words with a citation is the best way to go. Be sure that you provide citations, even when paraphrasing. APA 7th Edition Format Write a Theory to Practice The theory-to-practice section of your project should include suggestions for how the information gained through the literature review should affect future program planning and/or classroom practices (i.e., the connection between theory and practice). It should include a rationale for suggested changes to future practice. A sound rationale should explain how your suggestions for practice can profoundly improve learning and access for students with disabilities. The description of theory to practice should be two (2) pages in length. Theory-to-Practice Additional Guidance using Hypothetical Example APA 7th Edition Format Design a Graphic Organizer The graphic organizer should delineate the plan of action for implementing the changes suggested in your theory-to-practice section. Illustrate using a logic model, timetable, diagrams, cause and effect tables, flowcharts, etc., how the CDP is implemented (from the district level design to implementation by the classroom teachers). The graphic organizer should include procedures, interventions, goals or potential outcomes, essential resources to implement the plan, timelines, and an assessment of effectiveness. You should develop this part of your project so the reader can execute your plan of action with little or no questions. The graphic organizer should fit on one (1) page. APA 7th Edition Format Reminder: this one-page graphic organizer must be presented in your Board of Education CDP Proposal Video Presentation and is the only visual you can use. Write the Implementation Reflection The reflection section focuses on discussing collaborative strategies to implement your plan, which includes administration, families, and colleagues. For each collaborative approach included, describe the supportive roles and responsibilities of each team member. The reflection should represent your perspectives related to the reality of implementing your plan and how you will incorporate the help of others. The reflection should be 1-2 pages in length.
