  • Making of the Modern World

    Topic:  Freedom:

Research Question: Over the course of early American history (and other comparative histories we’ve studied), how has the definition of freedom of changed over time? How has freedom been defined/won/lost/challenged?

Considerations: Focus on either political, social, or economic history.

Political: Consider the nation’s founding fathers, their documents, policies, laws, practices, systems they created in order to help guide your thinking. Also, consider the juxtapositions surrounding these: States Rights vs Federal Power; landmark court cases; political campaigns; political propaganda; and early debates around freedom.

Social: Examine the factors that have pushed racial/ethnic groups, citizens, immigrants and new American citizens, genders, classes, and the powerful and the powerless towards and away from one another. Then, examine how social occurrences have influenced those interactions. You may lean on ideas/events/interactions that showcase how freedom has been defined through cultural movements and other everyday efforts to be or become American.

Economic: Consider the ways that American Business leaders have historically sought to define freedom along the lines of them being allowed/encouraged by the federal government to increase/change trade, banking, agriculture, industries, investments, and labor policies – to ensure profits. Then, juxtapose these ideologies with attempts from the federal government and the American people to leverage their power against industries, to keep them from gaining a large amount of control of society.

Examine the push and pull between these two factors.

Word Count: 1,000 Word minimum; 4 pages; 12-point font; double spaced.

Submission Info: Submit under the link in the “Final Materials” Module in Canvas.

Reminder: Read your requirements thoroughly. Remember to answer all questions.

    Guidelines:

     1) State a thesis statement: Between the years of 1590 – 1985 in US (and other comparative) History, how has freedom been defined, challenged, won, or lost?

Remember to focus your selections thematically: choose to focus on political, economic, or social history.

Remember to include brief outlines of what you will argue about the events/people/polices/etc. you will discuss in your thesis statement.

      2) Provide 4 specific examples in the body section to support your thesis.   You may choose 4-5 KA posts to help you achieve this. However, you will need to reconfigure the KA’s to support your overall argument/thesis.

In each paragraph, examine how each example supports your thesis statement.

Do not just provide a summary of what the example is; analyze how freedom was contested, won, lost, and/or defined.

At least one of your examples needs to include a comparison of US history to another nation (think back to our comparison on revolutions, etc.).

     3) Provide a strong conclusionary paragraph.

Consider how you have examined freedom.

Consider how the ways that freedom has been defined, won, lost, or challenged have influenced freedom today. Then, restate your argument.

     4) Include a bibliography page. Cite utilizing the Chicago Manual style. See the link below.

Sources you may use: Textbook; digital archives from Canvas; Film Reviews (cite the film); and any other scholarly articles. Lean on the sources I have given to you in each KA – you do not need to reinvent the wheel here. You’ve got this.

You should have at least 10 sources. 2 – 3 sources per example.

  • Part I: The Campaign: A PSA highlighting a particular attribute needed for the career The professionalism of criminal justice practitioners is often called into question

our presentation consists of two parts:

Part I: The Campaign:  A PSA highlighting a particular attribute needed for the career

The professionalism of criminal justice practitioners is often called into question.  While improved training is one of the proposed solutions, this course was developed with the belief that personal development both before and ongoing during employment can effectively work as a mechanism to increase commitment to the agency and improve one’s overall performance.

Students will create and present an informational campaign to draw attention to one essential attribute needed to be an exceptional practitioner in a chosen career. In Group Reflection #3, your group was asked to differentiate between employees/ students who you envision being minimally effective, average, or exceptional. Your group likely listed several attributes that separate the least effective from the most effective. Think back on those attributes and identify the ONE that is a “must have”. Your campaign will communicate the importance of this attribute and why it is critical to the career.  Recognizing that it must be developed, include action steps that can begin the development process. In other words, how would a current student start to develop this area?  This campaign will be a PowerPoint presentation.

Part 2: Briefly outline typical duties for this position ( criminal analyst), but be sure to think beyond the obvious. (Individual reflection #1)

    And…

    2) Outline the 5 most essential attributes and how your group defined them. (Group Reflection #3)

    3) What quality is needed to be exceptional in this position, and why? (Group Reflection #3)

    4) How can students gain real-world experience to enhance their resumes?

    5) Diversity and Considerations- address at least one of the following: how might one’s culture, age, race, gender, nationality, education, socioeconomic status, and/ or disability status may impact the experience of someone in this career field?

  • Reforming and improving the criminal justice system to address issues in policing and improve community relationships

Reforming and improving the criminal justice system to address issues in policing and improve community relationships is an important current area of focus. While many police departments, correctional facilities, and court systems have processes where they routinely enact changes to their policies and procedures, future reforms are inevitable and can begin at the individual level.Criminal justice professionals must always demonstrate professionalism, including when facing peers, senior officials, and the public to advocate for changes in the system. The mayor of a city in your area wants to make changes to the criminal justice system in response to an issue that has been worsening. Due to that, you and other representatives from various agencies and communities have been invited to speak at an upcoming city council meeting to propose and advocate for reforms that would be most beneficial to the city to improve this issue.

Preparation Determine 1 issue within the criminal justice system in your geographic area and name and research that area or city, that could benefit from reform. Select an issue supported by recent data trends. Refer to the following resources to select your issue:

Review the 6 pillars of recommendations on positive justice reforms from the Final Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing from the Office of Community Oriented Policies Services (COPS). Research trends using the FBI’s Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Data Explorer website or the All Data Analysis Tools page on the U.S. Department of Justice BJS website. Research reforms to the criminal justice system in your area or city that have been proposed or implemented for positive changes related to the issue you selected.

Select 1 positive reform to use as an example for this assessment.

Investigate the following roles in the successes of the reform movement you selected: legislative efforts, police unions, agency policy, social media, and community and nonprofit partnerships.

Assessment Deliverables This summative assessment has 2 deliverables:

Part 1: 10- to 12-slide professionalism presentation Part 2: 525- to 700-word executive summary of the presentation Refer to the instructions in Parts 1 and 2 to complete both deliverables.

Part 1: Professionalism Presentation ++REQUIRED Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation that persuades the city council committee to vote to enact your proposal.

Include the following information supported by evidence from your research:

    Criminal Justice Trends and Reform

Issue and Proposed Reform for Positive Change: Describe a trending issue within the criminal justice system in your local area that would benefit from a change according to recent data. Identify a reform to the criminal justice system that could be made that you think will have a positive future impact on this issue. Explain your reasons for predicting that the reform will be successful. Efforts Toward Reform

Past Reform Efforts: Evaluate the effects of any efforts that have already been made toward this reform. If a police union was involved in the reform, describe their involvement.  Potential Future Effects of Proposed Legislation: Evaluate the potential effect of proposed legislation on future reforms and explain which legislative effort will have the greatest impact on policing, if passed. Support your claims with examples from your research. Reform Implementation

Possibilities for Implementation of Reform: Describe the ways that the reform you are proposing could be implemented in your area.  Legislation/Policy Required for Implementation: Explain how legislation at the state or federal level or in departmental policy changes could be used to implement the reform. Pros and Cons of Implementation of Reform

Benefits and Pitfalls of Implementing Reform: Advocate for implementation of your chosen reform by summarizing its benefits and potential pitfalls.  Recommended Strategy for Implementation: Explain the manner in which you believe the reform can best be implemented. Justify your proposal with examples from your research. Citations and References Formatting Requirements

Cite at least 2 scholarly sources to support your presentation. Include citations either within the slide’s content or in the speaker notes on the slide where they are mentioned.

  • Use Tables in Excel and then filter accordingly and obtain the required measures from the summary statistics of the filtered data. a) Gender recoding (2 points). Mean of Males (1 point), mean of females (1 point), median of males

    1. Crosstabs: 2 points (Note: you have to do this table using Excel’s COUNTIFS function! You will redo this table with the PIVOT TABLE function in the last problem. You will not get credit if you do not do it with COUNTIFS).

Column chart: 2 points. Remember that the crosstab is a table whereas the column chart is a graph. They are not the same thing. It is very important that the percentages for either gender add to 100%.

Do the two genders differ in their opinions? 2 points.

    b.       Same as part a) but know you are looking at the relationship between Age and Opinion (6 points distributed as in part a)

    1. Same as part a) but know you are looking at the relationship between recoded salary and Opinion (6 points distributed as in part a).

    Problem 8 (18 points)

Use Tables in Excel and then filter accordingly and obtain the required measures from the summary statistics of the filtered data.

    a)       Gender recoding (2 points). Mean of Males (1 point), mean of females (1 point), median of males (1 point), median of females (1 points), std. dev of males (1 points) std. dev. of females (1 points).

    b)      Education recoding (2 points). 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of new Education level 1. 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of new Education level 2. 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of new Education level 3.

    c)       Age recoding (2 points). 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of Young. 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of Middle-Aged. 1 point for getting the mean, median and std. dev. of Older.

    Problem 21 (16 points

    1. Table of correlations (4 points)

Which one is most highly correlated with salary? (1 point)

    b.       Create scatterplots (6 points, 2 points each scatterplot). Do not forget to label the axis.

    1. Include a linear trend and equation in the scatterplot of the most highly correlated variable from part a)(3 points)

Interpret the equation, specifically what happens with Salary if the most highly correlated variable increases by 1? (2 points)

    Problem 34: (18 points)

Here you need to provide three crosstabs and three column charts constructed with PIVOT TABLES and with the sum of the row percentages being equal to 100% (6 points). Interpret the results in terms of how the variables are related (3 point).

Then you need to provide another three crosstabs and three column charts constructed with PIVOT TABLES and with the sum of the column percentages being equal to 100% (6 points). Interpret the results in terms of how the variables are related (3 points).

    Total points: 70

Mr. Carter is a 78-year-old widowed male presenting for evaluation of worsening sadness, fatigue, and social withdrawal over the past 6 months. His wife of 45 years passed away 8 months ago. Since her death, he reports decreased interest in activities he once enjoyed, including attending church and playing cards with friends. He describes poor appetite, difficulty sleeping, and low energy.

He denies active suicidal ideation but expresses passive thoughts such as “Sometimes I wonder what the point is.” He reports increasing forgetfulness, including misplacing items and missing bill payments. His daughter is concerned about his ability to live independently.
